Jnanpith awardee Girish Karnad and BJP MP Prathap Simha have received death threats on social media as the controversy rages in the state over the birth anniversary celebrations of Tipu Sultan.

Karnad was speaking at a state government-organised Tipu Jayanti event where he said that it would have been "apt" had the Bengaluru International Airport a Devanahalli been named after Tipu Sultan rather than Kempe Gowda. Karnad received a threat on Twitter that he would meet the same fate as rationalist MM Kalburg who was gunned down by two men at his residence in Dharwad recently. Security has been posted at the residence of Karnad after he received the threats.
